A Florida kid from very humble means ends up graduating from Dartmouth with a Neuroscience degree before moving to New York (and most recently L.A.) to work in entertainment. Sounds a little crazy, right?! If I wasn't my life then I might not believe it either! How did I get here? Check out my story below to find out! ;)
Everyone Starts Somewhere.
Florida grown by a rockstar single Jamaican mom, Anna-Kay (or "AK" as friends call her) used education to change her life. She worked her way to magnet arts middle and high schools and then to Dartmouth where she studied Neuroscience and thought she was destined for med school.
But ultimately, AK couldn’t ignore her love for TV, movies, music and all things entertainment and pop culture. She grew up loving TV staples like Entertainment Tonight and E! News and would pretend she was co-hosting with Nancy O’Dell or Giuliana Rancic – armed with a dress from her mom’s closet and a hair comb as her mic. Why couldn't she turn her dream into reality?
AK took a leap of faith and moved to NYC after college to pursue hosting. After years of working to break into the industry, AK's life changed when she won a 2014 national VH1 competition to be a reporter alongside Nick Lachey. She has since hosted and co-produced several digital shows for Condé Nast, including her popular "Bachelorette Recap" series. She's covered The GRAMMYs, The Oscars and The Tony Awards for Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter and also writes for HuffPost and Penguin Random House.
Anna-Kay recently moved from NYC to sunny L.A. to work on Steve Harvey's new (and recently Emmy-nominated!) talk show "STEVE". You can catch AK on the show's daily "Hey Steve" segment and she also hosts a Facebook Live show with Psychic Medium Reginald Lewis.
AK is an award-winning and nationally-ranked Slam Poet and was also a 2016 Miss New York USA contestant.
